Lost luxury
The starting point for this collection was an invitation to make work celebrating the history of South Hill Park in Berkshire. The now empty private rooms were once filled with the chatter, emotion, possessions and furnishings of its residents and visitors. The opulent carvings and plaster work would have been echoed in the flamboyant silk braids and tassels of their drapery and clothing. This oversized silk passementerie, itself an endangered craft, transports us to a time of luxury and drama and brings to mind many other inspirational places and stories.
